POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
Undergraduate Legal Intern

Project Description:
LawNY®’s Geneva office seeks two undergraduate interns to work on a variety of projects within our office. LawNY® is a not-for-profit law firm which provides free civil legal services to low-income clients in a fourteen-county region in western New York State. The Geneva division serves Livingston, Ontario, Seneca, Wayne and Yates counties, and provides representation primarily in the areas of housing, public benefits, family, education, consumer, health and elder law.

Position Description: Legal Assistance of Western New York, Inc. ® will accept up to two interns for the 2014 spring semester. A commitment of at least 10 hours per week throughout the semester is preferred. Interns will gain experience through a variety of projects involving research, outreach, and introductory client work. Other assignments may be assigned as needed. This semester’s projects include:

Pro-Se Divorce Clinic: An undergraduate intern will work with the LawNY® staff
to prepare for and help run our pro-se divorce clinic for unrepresented people. He or she will assist with
screening potential participants, intake, and other clinic participation.

LawHelp/NY: LawHelp.org/NY is a statewide website dedicated to providing free
legal information to low-income New Yorkers. The intern will assist LawHelp/NY’s Organizational Listing Coordinator on outreach initiatives to members of the client population and the non-profit community, as well as on content management on the website.

Veterans Outreach Project: The Veterans Outreach Project targets the unmet needs of local veterans, through our civil legal services and referrals to other organizations. The veterans intern will assist the AmeriCorps VISTA in the execution of this project by providing veteran referrals, assisting with outreach and conducting research to further expand the network of resources available.

Educational Benefit:
Interns will work cooperatively with experienced paralegals and attorneys and will receive supportive supervision enabling them to contribute to the work of the office. An intern with a strong interest in an office project not listed above should speak with a supervisor about taking on work in that area.

Intern Qualifications:
● 10 hour per week commitment preferred
● Must be in good academic standing, preference for junior or senior
● Excellent communication and writing skills
● Applicants should be enthusiastic, committed to an ethic of service and interested in serving
the community of Geneva
● Self-initiative and past experience in volunteering and/or within the non-profit sector preferred
