Date of service to be a Vietnam Vet

Question:

Jim.. my father was in the army from 1957 to 1960. He says he was in the reserves for 6 years after that but was never active or did weekends. Would he still be considered a Vietnam era veteran?

Jim's Reply:

No. We measure our service as those periods of active duty, not reserves. The Code of Federal Regulations Chapter 38 Paragraph 3.2 (f), the Vietnam Era is "The period beginning on February 28, 1961, and ending on May 7, 1975, inclusive, in the case of a veteran who served in the Republic of Vietnam during that period. The period beginning on August 5, 1964, and ending on May 7, 1975, inclusive, in all other cases.
