Legal Services NYC Veterans Justice Project Volunteer

Legal Services NYC seeks volunteers interested in working with our Veterans Justice Project (VJP). Candidates should be willing to volunteer between eight to ten hours a week consistently.

The VJP provides free civil legal services to New York City’s low-income military members, veterans and their families by assisting this population secure housing and income and in accessing education and healthcare. Our work is crucial in preventing veterans and their families from slipping into poverty.

The VJP is seeking volunteers on an ongoing basis to work with our attorneys on a variety of legal issues, including litigation projects, child support, divorce, housing, foreclosure, public benefits and consumer, health, tax, employment and other civil legal matters. Volunteers will work alongside VJP attorneys in conducting client interviews, training and doing intake at VA Hospitals and other veteran social service provider organizations, as well as work on advocacy efforts on behalf of veterans and their families. Volunteers will also respond to the needs of veterans seeking legal assistance through the Veterans Justice hotline, engage in legal research and writing and attend administrative hearings and assist in all aspects of the veterans’ cases.
