Disability and Military ID Card

Jim,

a friend of mine was in the Navy for four years and got out with an honorable discharge. Subsequently, he submitted various claims to VA and was ultimately granted 100% disability. In his case, since he is 100% disabled, is he authoriized to get a military i.d. card? Thank you.

He may be. The criteria is whether or not his 100% is permanent or temporary.

The benefits of CHAMPVA, Chapter 35 DEA and a military ID that allows base shopping privileges comes with a 100% Permanent rating.

If he has such a rating, he can take his award letter to a nearby military facility and ask where the ID facility is. Security will give him a pass to get there. Then he will check with them. If they can pull up his record on their system, he and his dependents will get the ID quickly. Otherwise they may have some paperwork to do.
