debt collector bad behavior

Question:

I’d a debt collector lied and harassed me knowing I’m below the poverty level and on public assistance threaten to have legal action and my home and car taken if I didn’t pay the amount then. In hindsight I know realize I should of called the company to confirm his statement. Also the initial amount was 1057 which climbed to 1957$ once AFNI got involved. They are purely heartless and not only lied to but over charged me after the two year statute for accidents. Please let me know If either you can help me or guide me in the correct direction because I am a dependent of a veteran. 33 long years of service from my father.

Jim's Reply:

Your status as the dependent of a veteran carries no weight at all. You are a civilian with a civilian debt problem and you'll have to resolve that on your own. You need to search locally for legal aid or retain a local lawyer to help you.

  • PS from StatesideLegal:  Use the"Find Legal Help" directory to look for a LSC provider near you -- many legal aid programs handle debt problems.
