Will a Cochlear Implant Result in a Loss of 100% Disability?

Question:

Dear Jim, I received a 100% disability due to hearing loss under IU. I may be a candidate for a cochlear implant. Will I loose my 100% PT rating if hearing significantly improves? Trying to choose between hearing better and funds to live on. Thanks

Jim's Reply:

In theory, that could happen. However, I doubt it. The implant won't restore your natural hearing abilities and it's doubtful it would enable you to return to full gainful employment. VA would have to prove sustained improvement as well as the ability to return to work. If I were you, I'd go for the implant. Don't forget that total hearing loss can cause some serious psycho-social disabilities like depression. If that's happening to you, get therapy and file the claim.
