How do I increase my disability rating after a prostate cancer diagnosis?

Question

Greetings Jim,

I am retired (USAF-23 yr) Vietnam vet with 10% disability.  I was diagnosed last month with prostate cancer.  I am currently evaluating my options - including "Wait and watch."  What should my immediate steps be with respect to the VA and possibly increasing my disability rating?

You should proceed to filing a claim at your earliest convenience. You can do that for yourself, no need to look for any sort of representative. I've provided a lot of detail about watchful waiting and how that affects your benefits at the VAWatchdog. A lot of guys are choosing watchful waiting and VA gets all confused. You have to know what to expect from them and be prepared. In brief, if you choose watchful waiting, the 100% temporary benefit will stay in place forever. VA will try to reduce it so you have to watch them too.
