VA Caregiver Support

VA has changed its rules to provide additional support to eligible post-9/11 Veterans who want to be cared for at home from a primary family caregiver. Under the new rules, eligible caregivers can receive a financial stipend, training, mental health services, and access to health insurance if they are not already under a health care plan.

VA has changed its rules to provide additional support to eligible post-9/11 Veterans who want to be cared for at home from a primary family caregiver.

Under the new rules, eligible caregivers can receive a financial stipend, training, mental health services, and access to health insurance if they are not already under a health care plan.

Starting May 9, 2011, veterans may download a copy of the Family Caregiver application (VA CG 10-10) here. The application enables the veteran to designate a primary family caregiver and secondary family caregiver if needed.  VA staff who are coordinating this process are stationed at every VA medical center and via phone at 1-877-222-8387 to assist veterans and their family caregivers with the application process.

To be eligible, the veteran must meet the following requirements:

  1. Have sustained a serious injury, including traumatic brain injury, psychological trauma or other mental disorder incurred or aggravated in the line of duty on or after September 11, 2001;
  2. Show one or both of the following:
    • A need for personal care services because of an inability to perform one or more activities of daily living, or
    • A need for supervision or protection based on symptoms or residuals of neurological impairment or injury;
  3. Be enrolled for VA health services, or complete the VA Form 10-10 EZ for Health Care services at the same time as the Application for Caregiver Services

More information about this process is provided here.  The new rule will be listed at 38 CFR Part 71.
