On December 20, 2012 the VA, IRS and SSA announced that they would begin coordinating income reporting to eliminate the need for the VA’s annual income report (Eligibility Verification Report or EVR). This is a great opportunity to reduce the burden on Veterans and their families to submit this report or risk losing their benefits.

However, while these three massive agencies work to coordinate their efforts, I believe the burden will still fall on those receiving benefits to report any change in income.

Providing Veteran focused outreach to non-legal service providers has taught me a lot about collaborating with VA and local social service provider case workers to provide effective and comprehensive legal assistance to their clients and also to encourage timely referrals to legal aid.

From Department of Labor career counselors to local shelter staff and from HUD VASH case workers to dedicated community volunteers, I have had the opportunity to work with a range of providers, all equally dedicated to serving those who have served and reducing veteran homelessness.
